一昨日まで大雪、そして今日は大晦日
一昨日まで大雪が降り、昨日までの３日間続けて除雪を行った。12月になっても雪が少なく、これは楽だなと思っていたところその楽観は打ち砕かれ、今季一番の大雪であった。今頃の雪はさらさらの所謂パウダースノーと言われるもので除雪もそれほど苦にはならないが、今回の雪は湿った重い雪であり除雪は結構体に堪えた。幸いに今日大晦日は晴れて穏やかな日であった。
さて、年末の雪で思い出すのは昨年の26日の吹雪のことである。その日、朝は晴れていたが10時前には天候が急変し雪が降り出し、昼前にはそれが吹雪となっていた。たまたまその日は家内が近所の人達と共に標茶町に出かけおり、この急変ですぐに帰ろうとしたが途中吹雪で車は動けなくなり、ＳＯＳを携帯電話で知らせてきた。すぐに、車で迎えに出て国道391号に出たものの、吹雪で前は“真っ白”、ほとんど何も見えない。ライトを点けゆっくりと走っても道幅が良く判らない、対向車も直前にならないと判らない、牧草地を抜ける所では風に煽られるなど、危険極まりない状況であった。結局、ノロノロ運転し弟子屈町の出口あたりに差し掛かった所で国道は通行止めとなっており、迎えに行くことはできなくなった。また、同じ道を同じ状況で引き返したのだが、ともかく緊張しながらゆっくりと運転しなんとか家にたどり着いた。
まさに、白魔とでも言えようか、道路は至る所に吹き溜まりができ、風は横殴りで雪を舞い上げながら、白で全てを覆い隠すようなすさまじい吹雪であった。家に戻りその日は家にじっと篭ってしまった。
家内であるが、その日は帰れず何とか標茶町に戻り宿に一泊して翌日帰ってきた。この顛末はまた、家内が詳しく書くであろう。こんな吹雪はめったにないが、年に１回ぐらいはあるであろうか、記憶に残るすさまじいものであった。
吹雪の時は無理をせず、家に篭っているのが一番。やむを得ず外出した時は、車を止めて暫く落着くのを待つしかない。国道には所々にその待避所があるが、その場所にたどり着ければ幸運だ。こんな時に備え、ガソリンも常に補充し、車内にはスコップや長靴、できれば寝袋などが積んであれば良い。道路沿いに農家などがあり、なんとか避難させて貰えれば安心だ。
北海道は、広い牧場や農場などが道路に沿ってあるが、そんな場所では吹雪はすさまじい。そのような所には防風雪柵が設置され、避難所なども設けられている。道東の中心の中標津町などの牧場には回りに松類などの林が設けられている。
これからも雪の話題が出てくるであろう。場合によっては、命にも関わることもあり、真剣に対処しなければならない。

玄関から道路までの除雪後の今日の様子、積雪は50ｃｍ位か、このあたりの雪は風で吹きとばされてもいる。
